In the time after the Civil War, when the railroad is expanding through the country, infamous outlaw Ben Wade, portrayed by Russell Crowe, and his gang of thieves and murderers are reeking havoc on the Southern Railroad stagecoach line.
Dan Evans, a smalltime in-debt cattle rancher, portrayed by Christian Bale, is being force off his lands by Hollander and his thugs to sell the land to to the same railroad.
Wade, the notorious outlaw, commences robbing an armored stagecoach headed for Bisbee that holds the railroad's money. The gunfire echoes across the hills. Evans and his two sons approach the shooting, witnessing the robbery and the death of more of his cattle.Later in Bisbee, Wade pays Evan for his lost cattle and time, but Evans needs more for his family and not just money. So when Wade is captured by the law, Evans, a Civil War veteran, volunteers to deliver him alive for the reward of $200 to the 3:10 to Yuma prison train in Contention that will take the killer to trial. Evans thinks he just stepped foot on a journey that will settle his debt and restore the respect of his family, but will he survive?
